Lawmakers talk tax reform, road plan

The 2022 session of the Kentucky General Assembly is in its veto recess with only two days left later this month.

House Bill 8, the tax reform bill, made it to the governor’s desk and lawmakers will almost certainly have to override a Governor Andy Beshear veto when they return.

The final version is a more cautious approach to incrementally reducing the income tax over a period of years while expanding the sales tax base. The hope for Republican lawmakers is the eventual elimination of the income tax and Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke believes the more conservative approach will still get Kentucky there without taxing groceries or medicine.

Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville agrees, believing Kentucky will meet the revenue targets to tick back the income tax rate.

Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County like many things included in the road plan for his district, but wishes it was more aggressive with funding for KY 115 widening and construction of the proposed industrial connector.

The General Assembly has the ability to override any veto, as it only requires a simple majority vote in Kentucky.
