South Main St. shooting suspect appears for preliminary hearing

The man injured in a shooting March 24 on South Main Street remains in a Nashville hospital and the case against the alleged shooter is headed to a Christian County grand jury following a preliminary hearing Friday morning.

Defense attorney Eric Bearden represents 25-year old Jonathan Amerson of Hopkinsville, and Hopkinsville Police Department Detective Michael Luckingham told him that Amerson and his brother had been in an altercation earlier in the evening with Jermonte Davis. The shooting reportedly happened when Davis and his friend went to confront Amerson outside an apartment complex in the 1700 block of South Main.

Amerson reportedly admitted to shooting Davis, but gave different explanations of how it transpired.

Davis was shot in the torso, with the bullet going through his liver and exiting his back. He was flown to a hospital in Nashville, where he continues to receive treatment.

Police say Amerson hid the gun on top of a stackable washer/dryer following the shooting and it was later recovered.

Amerson is charged with first-degree assault, tampering with evidence and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and Judge Foster Cotthoff sent those charges to the grand jury for consideration, while leaving his cash bond at $100,000.
