MORNING SPORTS BRIEFS 3/21/22

NCAA Tournament

Top seed Arizona was taken to the limit in an 85-80 overtime thriller against nine-seed TCU to advance to the Sweet 16. Elsewhere on Sunday, the Cinderella’s continued to move the ball around as 10-seed Miami pounded two-seed Auburn 79-61 and 11-seed Iowa State took down three-seed Wisconsin 54-49.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is the first N-C-A-A Division One coach to reach 12-hundred wins. The Blue Devils beat Michigan State 85 to 76 to earn a trip to the Sweet 16. Krzyzewski is in his final season and has led the Blue Devils to five national championships and 12 Final Fours.

MLB

Cactus League: The Cincinnati Reds defeated the San Francisco Giants 9-4 Sunday. The Reds meet the Chicago Cubs today. The Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers played to a 2-2 tie.

Grapefruit League: St. Louis topped the New York Mets 6-4. The Redbirds meet the Washington Nationals today. The Atlanta Braves downed Philadelphia 5-1. The Braves face the Boston Red Sox today.

NBA

Ja Morant did not play Sunday in the Memphis Grizzlies 122-98 win over the Houston Rockets. The Grizzlies return to action Wednesday night hosting the Brooklyn Nets.

Bowling Green native Terry Taylor had 17 points in 21 minutes off the bench in the Indiana Pacers 129-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The Pacers host the Sacramento Kings Wednesday night.

NHL

The Nashville Predators are fine-tuning their roster as the playoffs approach. Nashville acquired defenseman Jeremy Lauzon from the Seattle Kraken yesterday. The Preds send back a 2022 second-round pick to Seattle. Nashville is in action this evening in Anaheim. First puck drops at 9 pm.

Golf

Sam Burns won the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship Sunday after taking down Davis Riley in a two-hole playoff. Burns and Riley were tied atop the leaderboard at 17-under par. Burns birdied the second hole to secure his second consecutive Valspar Championship. Louisville area native Justin Thomas and Matthew NeSmith finished tied for third place at 16-under, while Matt Fitzpatrick and Brian Harman tied for fifth at 14-under.

NASCAR

William Byron crossed the finish line first to pick up the win at the NASCAR Folds Of Honor QuikTrip 500 Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It’s the first win of the season for Byron. Ross Chastain finished in second. Kurt Busch, Daniel Suarez, and Corey LaJoie rounded out the top five.
