A medical marijuana bill is heading to the Kentucky Senate after passing the House Thursday night, with local legislators weighing in on that vote.
Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke voted in favor of medical marijuana, saying he knows that it will benefit children and adults alike who are sick with the conditions the bill regulates it for.
The medical marijuana would not be taxed, because Kentucky does not tax medications. Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville voted against it, saying he has made it clear where he stands on the issue, though he remains sympathetic to those who would qualify to use it.
The bill now heads to the Senate, where Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County says he will support it, but its fate remains uncertain as he’s unsure how the rest of the Senate is feeling towards it.
It was a full day in the Legislature Friday as numerous big-ticket bills were passed, including House Bill 606 legalizing sports betting in the state and House Bill 608 regulating ‘gray’ gaming machines. Both items now head to the Senate for consideration.
