Legislation regarding catalytic converter thefts passes committee

Legislation sponsored by Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County targeting thieves who cut catalytic converters off vehicles in Kentucky has made it out of a House committee.

Senate Bill 114 would require scrap dealers to obtain identification from anyone attempting to sell catalytic converters and they’d have to provide some type of documentation showing ownership of the converters.

Senator Westerfield says he’s heard from citizens and lawmakers around the state saying the problem is widespread.

Purchasers who take in the converters without the proper documentation could face a Class B misdemeanor charge under the bill.

The legislation received approval from the House Transportation Committee and now heads to the full House for consideration.
