Tax reform bill passes full House

Legislation that sets the path for Kentucky to eventually eliminate the state income tax has passed the full House.

House Bill 8 is sponsored by state Representative Jason Petrie of Todd County, who says it would reduce the income tax from five to four-percent beginning next year and expand the number of services that require payment of state sales tax.

Petrie says once certain set revenue figures are reached, the income tax could be reduced as much as another percentage point each year until it’s zero.

He says the types of services that would become sales tax-required would be optional ones that would theoretically not do common citizens great harm.

Petrie, who represents Todd, Logan and a portion of Christian County, stressed that House Bill 8 does not put a sales tax on groceries or medicine.

Representatives Myron Dossett, Walker Thomas, Lynn Bechler, Melinda Prunty and Mary Beth Imes all voted for the bill.

The measure now heads to the full Senate.
