MORNING SPORTS BRIEFS 2/28/22

MLB

Major League Baseball and the Players Association are continuing their efforts to end the league’s current lockout. ESPN reports it was a “productive day of talks” when the sides met multiple times on Sunday. While productive, the union reportedly still feels the sides are far apart on terms for a new collective bargaining agreement. The sides are working to avoid delaying Opening Day, which is scheduled for March 31st. If no deal is reached by the end of today, the MLB has made it clear that any games missed won’t be rescheduled.

NBA

Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies return to action tonight hosting the San Antonio Spurs. Tipoff from Fed Ex Forum is at 7 pm.

NASCAR

Kyle Larson held off the field to take home the win at the Auto Club 400 in Fontana. It’s the first win of the season for last year’s NASCAR Cup Series champ. Austin Dillon finished in second while Erik Jones took third. Daniel Suarez and Joey Logano rounded out the top five.

Golf

Sepp Straka is celebrating a comeback victory in the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic. Down by five shots entering the final round, Straka birdied the last hole to beat Shane Lowry by one shot for the title. With the victory, he becomes the first Austrian to win a PGA Tour event. Straka finished the tournament 10-under par while Lowry finished at nine-under.

Miguel Angel Jimenez at 18 under was a four shot winner over Woody Austin and Bernhard Langer at the PGA Tour Champions Cologuard Classic in Tucson, AZ.
