The Kentucky Senate is considering a bill that would limit a governor’s pardoning powers.
The proposed bill would prevent the governor from issuing pardons or commuting sentences 30 days before an election for the office through the fifth Tuesday after the election.
The bill is sponsored by Senator Christian McDaniel who says the measure would make sure governors would have to “stand in front of voters” after the pardons and commutations were issued.
The push comes after former Governor Matt Bevin issued hundreds of pardons and commutations just before he left office, including some murder cases.
