The Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department has plans to construct a new building on land next to its current facility.
Chief Nick Belair says they’re running out of space for trucks and equipment in their current home near the corner of South Main and Spring Street.
The fire department will be tearing down the old drug store building that was damaged by the recent tornado and a garage building that stands between that building and the current fire department.
Chief Belair says the new building will provide much-needed space to grow and it will also allow the fire department the ability to host community events.
Multiple options are being looked at for the future of the current fire department building, including the feasibility of converting it into a community storm shelter, though that could wind up being too expensive.
