A calmer weather pattern is settling into the region this week and forecasters are hopeful western Kentucky may have seen the last of bitter cold weather this winter.
Mike York with the National Weather Service in Paducah says anything that hasn’t melted from last week’s storm will be history early this week.
Early forecasts for next week show average temperatures and above average precipitation with a storm system in the middle of next week, though York says it isn’t looking like a major winter storm at this point.
Even longer-range models show the end of February and beginning of March to be warmer than average and while that doesn’t preclude the region from having more wintry precipitation on a given day, York hopes it’s an indication we won’t see more episodes of extreme cold.
While this week should be dry, long-term forecasts are calling for higher than average precipitation for the next three weeks.
