Roads slick and treacherous after ice, snow

If a road wasn’t already ice-covered from yesterday’s ice storm, it’s likely now covered in snow after more wintry precipitation overnight and anyone who can is urged to stay at home.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. for the Pennyrile region of western Kentucky as light snow continues to fall in some places.

There won’t be school traffic to worry about as Christian, Todd, Trigg, Hopkins, Muhlenberg Caldwell, Montgomery, Stewart and every other county in the area has closed Friday, in addition to UHA, Heritage Christian Academy, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, Dawson Springs Independent Schools and Fort Campbell Schools—with most to use non-traditional instruction.

Dispatchers in Christian, Todd and Trigg counties reported only a few accidents overnight with low traffic volume, but all said roads are slick and treacherous. Many roads have a layer of ice hidden by a coating of snow.

Todd County Sheriff’s Sgt. Patrick Turner reports roads there to be extremely slick with ice covered with snow. He says anyone who can stay at home should.

State, county and city road crews are working to improve driving conditions, but need time and space to make progress. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is reminding motorists who must get out to be on the lookout for trees that may have fallen onto roads under stress from ice overnight.

Pennyrile Electric has 3,112 members without power due to yesterday’s ice storm, with a majority in western Trigg and northern Christian County, with Brent Gilkey saying crews are working to restore service as quickly as possible.

He says there doesn’t appear to be much major damage to infrastructure, so hopefully most of the outages will be relatively short-lived.

The linemen out overnight had to work in brutal conditions, with temperatures in the 20’s, gusty winds and a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow.

ECC did not know of any current outages in the city of Hopkinsville.

Kentucky Utilities reports about 1,400 customers without power across the state, including a few outages in northern Christian and southern Hopkins counties. Kenergy also reported significant outages in Hopkins, Caldwell and Lyon counties.
