NWS: Ice storm likely to cause major travel issues, some power outages

Major travel impacts and potential power outages will be the primary threats as an ice storm reaches western Kentucky Thursday.

An ice storm warning remains in effect for all of western Kentucky from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Friday, with the changeover from rain to freezing rain expected after 6 a.m. Thursday in Christian, Todd and Trigg Counties. The time period for heaviest ice accumulation is expected to be between noon and 6 p.m.

Fourth tenths to three-quarters of an inch of ice accumulation is expected in the region and National Weather Service in Paducah Warning Coordination Meteorologist Christine Wielgos says travel will become very difficult.

It’s hard to predict how widespread power outages will become, but outages will certainly be possible with the combination of ice and wind.

Wielgos says if you must travel Thursday, let someone know where you’re going and pack an emergency kit in your vehicle.
