Local lawmakers discuss legislation, tornado recovery

Local legislators continue to work on local and statewide priorities in the 2022 session of the Kentucky General Assembly.

Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke has officially filed his legislation that would give school districts additional disaster days that don’t have to be made up after last month’s tornadoes and he says it’s been well-received so far.

A bill is advancing through the Senate that would make stealing packages from porches a felony.  The thefts are often referred to as porch piracy and it has become a huge problem.  Tens of millions of packages are stolen across the country each year, including in Kentucky.

State Senator Whitney Westerfield says currently the crime is a misdemeanor in the commonwealth, but Senate Bill 23 would make it a felony.

Representative Walker Thomas says efforts will continue this session, possibly as soon as this week, to provide more relief to communities impacted by the December 10 and 11 tornadoes.
