Kentucky purchases temporary travel-trailers for residents displaced by December tornadoes

Two-hundred camper travel-trailers have been purchased for people displaced by the December 10 and 11 tornadoes in Kentucky to utilize for what’s being called medium-term housing.

Governor Andy Beshear was joined by other state officials to give an update on the Commonwealth Shelter Program Thursday morning.

Kentucky Emergency Management Director Mike Dossett says families with school-aged children will be among the first to receive one of the trailers.

Governor Beshear says there will also be an emphasis on residents staying in state parks or in hotels outside of their community and there will be leniency on where they can be placed.

The trailers are new and range in size from 27 to 36 feet long.

There has already been approval for public land to be used in some instances in Dawson Springs for temporary location of the trailers. Representative Jim Gooch noted that most displaced residents are looking at a timetable of at least two years for their homes to be rebuilt due to the number of structures that were heavily damaged or destroyed.
