Black ice, some snow an issue on area roads

Last night’s light snow and ice event won’t go down in history with any major winter storms, but it could cause some traffic issues this morning if motorists aren’t careful.

Dispatchers in Christian, Todd and Trigg counties reported areas of black ice on all roadways and snow and black ice on lesser-traveled roads and side-streets. There had been very few reports of accidents overnight, likely due in large part to lack of traffic out and a about.

Motorists are urged to slow down and use extreme caution if they are getting out this morning and be especially cautious for black ice.

Christian, Todd, Trigg, Montgomery and nearly every other public school system in the area are closed today, as is Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, University Heights Academy, Heritage Christian Academy, Fort Campbell Schools, Austin Peay State University, Hopkinsville Community College and Madisonville Community College, with many school systems using non-traditional instruction. F Todd and Trigg schools will also use NTI Friday due to high COVID numbers.

You’ll want to dress warm if you’re going outside this morning, with wind chill values in the single-digits. The National Weather Service in Paducah doesn’t expect temperatures to rise above freezing again until Saturday afternoon.
