Christian Fiscal Court hears update on tornado recovery, approves road plan

Christian Fiscal Court approved the county road plan during Tuesday’s meeting and heard an update on disaster recovery in the county.

Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham says the last month has been a busy one, between a destructive tornado that hit Pembroke on December 11, then a tornado that significantly damaged buildings on the east side in Hopkinsville that was immediately followed by snowfall. He says tremendous progress has been made in cleaning up the Pembroke community, and they’ll be expanding out to other areas that sustained damage from the December tornadoes.

He says hundreds of people have filed with either FEMA or the SBA for assistance, which he says is a good thing so people can begin rebuilding or repairing as needed.

Graham says the damage in Hopkinsville from the New Year’s Day tornado reached the county’s threshold on cost to receive FEMA assistance, but now they have to see if it reaches the state threshold.

Magistrates approved the Christian County Road program, with Judge-Executive Steve Tribble pointing out that they’re slowly whittling down the number of gravel roads in the county, with roughly 34 miles of gravel road remaining.

In other action, magistrates approved yearly budgets for both the Christian County Clerk’s Office and the Christian County Sheriff’s Department.
