MORNING SPORTS BRIEFS 1/11/22

College Football

Georgia won its first national championship in 41 years in routing Alabama 33-18 in the College Football Playoff National Championship game in Indianapolis. Kelee Ringo returned an interception 79 yards for a touchdown to seal the deal for the Bulldogs. Stetson Bennett threw two touchdowns, including a go-ahead score to Adonai Mitchell to give Georgia the lead for good. Bryce Young threw a touchdown and two interceptions in the loss. Cameron Latu caught a touchdown for Alabama, which was unsuccessful in its defense of last year’s national title.

The College Football Playoff is staying at four teams, for now. Leaders of the CFP failed to reach an agreement about expanding the field beyond the current setup.
The possibility of more teams being added is not totally out of the picture yet, as things could be agreed upon before the end of the current 12-year contract, which is set to expire in 2025. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says that the 10 FBS commissioners voted, but did not come “close to unanimity.”

NBA

The best team in the NBA comes to Memphis tonight. The Grizzlies host Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors. Memphis is not far behind Golden State in the standings at 28-and-14 and is riding a franchise-record nine-game winning streak.

NHL
The Nashville Predators put their four game win streak on the line tonight in hosting the Colorado Avalanche. First puck drops at 7 in Bridgestone Arena.
