Third District State Senator Whitney Westerfield is disappointed he’s likely to lose Todd and Logan counties under the proposed Senate redistricting maps that are likely to be finalized by the end of the week, but says he looks forward to representing the people of Christian, Caldwell and Muhlenberg counties.
Kentucky’s 2020 census data population was divided 38 ways and each of the 38 districts must be within five percent—higher or lower—of that quotient to be constitutional.
Senator Westerfield says he petitioned for reconsideration of the changes to his district and even asked for Simpson County to be added to the Third District, but was told the numbers wouldn’t work.
Todd and Logan would now be part of a 32nd District that also includes Simpson and southern Warren County and Westerfield has confidence that Senator Mike Wilson of Bowling Green would do a good job representing the area.
The proposed congressional redistricting map also begins its journey in the Senate and Westerfield is not pleased with a proposed First District that sprawls from the Mississippi River in Fulton County through much of western Kentucky and then under Bowling Green and up to Frankfort.
District 1 is currently represented by Congressman James Comer, who is seeking re-election in 2022.
All of the amended maps are expected to receive final approval by the legislature by the time they adjourn for the week sometime Saturday.
