Gov.: COVID-19 spiking in Kentucky, nation

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is saying that the evidence is clear that omicron variant of COVID-19 is present in Kentucky, as the state reported over 5,000 new cases Wednesday.

The next COVID-19 update won’t take place until Monday due to the New Year holiday, but Governor Beshear reported 5,530 new cases of COVID-19 in the state Wednesday and a positivity rate that leapt from 12.61 percent to 14.46 percent, a state record. Governor Beshear says some cases could be coming in from the holidays, but the evidence is clear that COVID is back on the rise across the nation.

Along with those well-known health guidelines, the governor says people can help keep themselves and others healthy by getting tested frequently.

There were also 21 new deaths, so the death toll in the Commonwealth now sits at 12,118.
