Coach Cal, Gov. Beshear visit with tornado survivors, bring shoe donations

University of Kentucky Basketball Coach John Calipari was joined by other Wildcat greats and Governor Andy Beshear as they visited tornado survivors Sunday morning at Lake Barkley State Resort Park and Pennyrile Forest State Park.

They also brought shoes from Samritan’s Feet, which donated 10,000 shoes to residents of Kentucky impacted by the tornados.

In his visit to Pennyrile Forest, Calipari noted the resilience of the survivors—many of whom are staying at the parks until they can find other housing.

Calipari and the Kentucky athletics program raised $5 million with a telethon and he worked with Emmanuel Ohonme to bring the shoe donation to the commonwealth.

Governor Beshear said these tough times have brought out the best in many Kentuckians and he pledged to see everything rebuilt in the coming months and years.

Former University of Kentucky basketball greats Darius Miller and Jack “Goose” Givens and Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart were also on hand and greeted the crowd and took pictures with survivors.

Coach Calipari took a photo with the Dawson Springs High School basketball team and remembered former Panther Logan McKnight, who died after a motor vehicle accident last month in Caldwell County, as McKnight had attended his basketball camp in Lexington.
