Consolidated high school name under consideration by school board

The new consolidated high school could soon have a name, following a presentation to the Christian County School Board at Thursday evening’s meeting, but it remains up for consideration for now.

The Naming Committee, which complied the data from a community survey, made the recommendation that the new school be called either Hopkinsville Christian County Academy, or The Academies of Hopkinsville Christian High School, or something along those lines, pending board approval.

The new school, which will consolidate Hopkinsville High School, Christian County High School and the Gateway Academy, could also sport the colors black and royal blue and the mascot may be the Wolves or Wolfpack, with those being the overwhelming choices from the survey. The possibilities were presented to the community via a survey earlier this year, allowing people to pick from five options about what their favorite was and there were roughly 6,000 submissions through the community survey.

Assistant Superintendent Josh Hunt told the board the night was more about presenting the options and facts to the board, and they can take up with actual approval of the name sometime in January.

Board member Jeff Moore says they should greatly consider what the public wants in this.

Board member Lindsey Clark says voting for the names were close across the board, and he thinks they should stick with history when choosing the name.

Board Chair Tom Bell argued that the ‘academy’ title would show that this school will be unlike any other public school in the state.

Ultimately, no vote was held on any naming recommendation at Thursday’s meeting, with Board member Mike Walker requesting that the possible name, colors and mascot be released to the public to see their perception before a vote was held.
