At least 1,000 homes destroyed statewide by tornadoes

Governor Andy Beshear says search crews are still finding bodies in the wake of the deadly tornadoes that hit western Kentucky.

Beshear says no victims have been pulled alive from a Mayfield candle factory since Saturday afternoon.  Dozens are believed to have been killed when the factory was destroyed Friday night.

The governor says the death toll from the tornadoes — “best case scenario” — is at least 50.   But he’s not optimistic.  On Saturday, Beshear said the toll could reach 100.

Eighteen counties sustained tornado damage.

More than 300 Kentucky National Guard members have been deployed to the affected areas to help with debris removal and law enforcement.

Kentucky State Parks are providing shelter to affected families.

The National Weather Service estimates the tornado that hit Mayfield, Dawson Springs and other communities was at least EF-3 in strength. Warning Coordination Meterologist Christine Wielgos says surveys are still underway and the tornado rating could be higher.

The U.S. Homeland Security secretary and FEMA administrator toured the damage on Sunday and pledged full support from the federal government.
