Demolition begins at two Second Baptist Church buildings

Demolition began Tuesday morning at Second Baptist Church, where two buildings are being torn down as part of a larger renovation and construction project.

David Wimpy is the Second Baptist Church Building Committee chairman and says they’re demolishing the educational building that was constructed in the 1950’s and the historic Duncan Chapel, which is over a century old.

The plan is to eventually build a new activities building on that site, but with the price of materials going up during the pandemic, Wimpy says the next phase will be extensive renovations to the existing sanctuary that was constructed in 1973.

Demolition of Duncan Chapel is bittersweet for many who have so many memories associated with the building, but Wimpy says the church ultimately decided it was time for change.

Wimpy says the church is holding services and Sunday school classes across South Kentucky Avenue in the activities building.
