Kentucky reached another grim milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic Monday, with over 10,000 Kentuckians now dead due to the virus.
During Monday’s update, Governor Andy Beshear said it was a number they had hoped to never reach, and he asked every to keep those who have been lost and the loved ones they left behind in their thoughts and prayers.
Breaking down the numbers from the weekend, there were 1,158 new COVID cases reported Saturday, along with 35 deaths, then Sunday saw 585 cases and 19 deaths, and then Monday added 642 cases along with 26 newly reported deaths. Those numbers put the total number of deaths in the Commonwealth due to COVID-19 at 10,019.
The positivity rate is back up to 5.44 percent, after dipping briefly below five percent in October and the governor says while its not quite a warning sign yet, they will be keeping a close eye on that rate.
The governor says the data is trending towards showing the state in a plateau for new cases.
The Pfizer vaccine is starting to rollout for children between the ages of five and 11 years old, and Beshear urged parents to go online to the CDC website and find a location nearby that is administering those doses.
