Christian County High School and Hopkinsville High School are both celebrating their local marching band programs, after both advanced to state finals this past weekend.

CCHS Band Director Anthony Darnall appeared on WHOP Wednesday and says both bands fall into the 4A category, which means there’s a hundred members or more, and that the size ranking system has changed multiple times over the years.

He says the scoring system for marching bands is very exacting and precise, with the difference in placing often coming down to tenths of a point. Christian County took fourth in the state, with Hopkinsville taking sixth—it’s the first time the bands have advanced to state together.

Darnall says his band’s show was titled “Chasing Shadows” and featured several different musical pieces while members performed a narrative at the same time.

Although the traditional marching season is over, the students will stay busy as they head into concert band season and gear up for multiple performances.

Both bands were also awarded Distinguished ratings for their performances at Kroger Field Saturday. Hopkinsville High School’s band director, Grant Jones, is set to appear on WHOP later in the week.
