Approximately 234 World War II veterans die each day in the United States and Hopkinsville lost one of its own over the weekend with the death of Elwood Richardson at the age of 96.
Richardson joined two other WWII veterans in 2019 on an Honor Flight Bluegrass to Washington D.C. and told WHOP News before he left that he was looking most forward to seeing the memorial dedicated to those who were lost in World War II.
In December of 2019, Richardson was one of two local veterans to be honored by riding in the inaugural parade for Governor Andy Beshear.
Lela Hale of Christian Care Communities coordinates the local honor flights and remembered him on social media Sunday as a man of faith who loved his family more than anything and who was a scholar on everything World War II.
Richardson is survived by two daughters, several grandchildren and a sister.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hughart, Beard and Giles Funeral Home.
