Sen. Paul pushing bill that would remove animal testing mandate for pharmaceuticals

Republican U.S. Senator Rand Paul of Bowling Green is working across the political aisle in supporting legislation to reduce pharmaceutical testing on animals.

Senator Paul is partnering with Senator Corey Booker of New Jersey on the FDA Modernization Act to end animal testing mandates.

Paul says the bill wouldn’t stop animal testing, but it would allow scientists to forego it when it’s not necessary as new methods have developed.

He says there’s also evidence that animal testing is often not effective.

Senator Booker says, “Thanks to modern scientific innovation, the use of animal toxicity testing for experimental drugs has become increasingly obsolete. This legislation will eliminate unnecessary suffering for countless animals when scientifically reliable alternative testing methods are available.”
