The South Western Kentucky Economic Development Council Board of Directors heard an update on the possibility of a beef processing plant coming to Christian County at Monday’s meeting.
Executive Director Carter Hendricks began the discussion by talking about the economic impact the facility would have if it chose to move here—they would be looking to hire approximately 1,300 people with jobs paying $18 to $25 an hour to start. He described the industry, which has not yet been revealed, as an American company trying to help the country have a stronger independence in the food supply chain.
The proposed 500,000 square foot facility would be located in Commerce Park #2 near John Rivers Road and Hendricks says it would be totally state-of-the-art and regulated by multiple environmental and other agencies.
Wayne Hunt went and visited an existing facility operated by the company and he says he noticed no odor and the whole process of creating the product took place at that building. He says he asked multiple questions while there and he doesn’t see how this could be detrimental for the county.
Hendricks made it clear that this is not a done deal yet, but he and his staff are committed to winning the project to this area, emphasizing that confidentially is of vital importance at this stage not just for the company, but for the region.
