Pembroke hosting community meeting over reports of meat processing plant considering area

There will be a public meeting Monday night in Pembroke regarding concerns over reports of a large meat processer considering a location near the former CSX railyard at the northwestern edge of the town.

State Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke says he heard the rumors of what’s being called a “slaughterhouse” by some in the community a few weeks ago, but he hasn’t been able to obtain many details from state or local officials due to non-disclosure agreements.

Dossett says it would be easier to dispel any false rumors or to work through any potential concerns with more information available and the name of the proposed industry would be a good start.

The notice for the meeting scheduled for Monday night at 6 at the old Pembroke gym on US 41 claims the plant would have 60 cattle trailers coming in each day and Representative Dossett says he has transportation and workforce concerns if that’s true.

Dossett says he’s been in contact with Kentucky Ag. Commissioner Ryan Quarles and he says his office has not been involved in the recruitment process and he wasn’t able to provide any additional information.

Organizers of the meeting want residents to urge Hopkinsville and Christian County officials to vote no to any incentive packages that would help bring the plant to the county.
