This is Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in Kentucky and state officials celebrated adults who are bettering themselves through education during an event Tuesday morning at the State Capitol.
Leaders of Kentucky Adult Education were on hand to watch Governor Andy Beshear sign a document proclaiming the week a time to honor educators and their adult learners.
Lt. Gov. Jaqueline Coleman, who also serves as secretary of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, noted the negative outcomes that become more likely when an adult doesn’t have a high school diploma or GED.
Getting that high school equivalency can open a myriad of opportunities for employment and further education.
Governor Beshear noted that cost is no longer an impediment in Kentucky to getting a GED, as action was taken last year to make the process free to the student.
Several Kentuckians with exceptional stories of getting their GED later in life were honored as “Adult Education Champions.”
