Trial postponed again for shooting suspect as victim refuses to appear

For the second time this year, trial for Travis Mayes was postponed in Christian Circuit Court Monday when the man he allegedly shot last year refused to appear in court.

Mayes, a Trigg County resident, allegedly shot Darrell Bateman at East Second and Vine Street in February of 2020.

His first trial in May was postponed when Bateman didn’t show and while the Commonwealth was prepared to proceed Monday without their victim, Judge John Atkins called it off and issued a contempt warrant for Bateman’s arrest.

Another pre-trial conference was set for November 3.

Mayes was released from custody the first time his trial was postponed and remains a free man, pending trial.

Mayes is charged with first-degree assault.
