Sharpe Street murder suspect arraigned in circuit court

Mory Burse, the man charged in the July shooting death of Devon Kendrick, was arraigned in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday afternoon.

Public defender Rick Sanborne is representing Burse and entered a not guilty plea on his behalf, and informed the court he has not received any discovery in this case yet.  Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling says that’s because they are still awaiting the evidence themselves, with some of it not likely to be returned for several months.

Judge Andrew Self clarified to Burse that he will begin receiving evidence to review with his lawyer within the next few weeks, but he may have to wait a while to receive all of it.

A pre-trial hearing was set for December 15, with all parties hopeful to have all the evidence in hand at that time.  Burse is alleged to have used a 9 mm handgun to shoot 48-year-old Devon Kendrick of Hopkinsville multiple times in the torso and arms just before midnight July 28 at a location behind the East Ninth Street Dollar General on Sharpe Street.

Leon Grimes, who is charged with murder in connection with the death of Calvin Buckner—a separate incident from Burse’s case—was set to be arraigned Wednesday, but it was continued until October 6 as his attorney was not able to be present.
