Woman charged with leaving small child in hot car

A Dawson Springs woman was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly leaving a small child in a hot car while she went inside a home.

An arrest citation for 32-year-old Bailey Whitman of Dawson Springs says someone called ECC a little before 8 p.m. saying there was an unclothed small child left inside an unlocked vehicle at a home in the 2300 block of South Virginia Street in Hopkinsville.

The caller removed the child from the vehicle and officers found the child, caller and Whitman when they arrived on scene.

Whitman allegedly admitted to leaving the child in the car for 20 to 30 minutes while she checked on her brother in the home, but said she looked outside to check on the child from time to time. Police say the window tint was too dark for that to have been possible.

The Kentucky Mesonet site showed it was still 85 degrees in Hopkinsville at 7:30 p.m.

Whitman was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor.
