One dead after fiery crash on I-24 in Marshall County

A fiery, multi-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on I-24 in Marshall County killed one man and closed the interstate for nearly 12 hours.

Kentucky State Police say 63-year-old Gary Johnson of Louisiana was westbound in a tractor-trailer near the 28 mile-marker when he struck an abandoned vehicle parked on the right side of the road. That caused him to swerve into the left lane, sending another semi into the median.

Johnson’s vehicle continued through the median and partially into the eastbound lanes, where it overturned and caught fire.

The other semi crossed the eastbound lanes and traveled off the interstate, striking a tree line on the south side of the road.

An eastbound car collided with both trucks during the crash, according to KSP.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, while all of the other drivers avoided injury.
