A black bear was spotted north of Princeton Friday in Caldwell County.
Amanda Coleman spotted the bear going into a corn field in the area of 250 Sugar Creek Road and snapped photos she posted on Facebook.
A black bear was spotted in Muhlenberg County a few years ago, when Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Information Specialist Kevin Kelly said young male black bears are known to wander during the summer months.
Black bears are common in southeastern Kentucky but Kelly says it’s doubtful that’ll happen in western Kentucky, as they tend to stick to more mountainous terrain. It’s likely the Caldwell County bear eventually head back home, but if you come across a bear, do not approach it and definitely do not feed it.
You can also wait to put your trash out until the day it’s collected if you’re concerned, because bears are attracted to the smell of food and may damage garbage cans or other property. Kelly says black bears are very rarely a danger to people, unless they are mothers with babies, and most of all he encourages people to enjoy the sight as they were once extinct in the state.
A black bear was also spotted in south Todd County in 2018 and in Webster County earlier this summer.
