MLB: Americans win ninth straight All Star Game

The American League won its ninth consecutive All Star Game downing the National League 8-2 last night in Denver. Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took the MVP trophy, homering and batting two runs in. Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani earned the win, pitching a spotless opening frame.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred says the process of keeping the A’s in Oakland is “at the end.” Manfred said that Oakland will need to make a decision soon on whether they want to play in the city going forward. The Athletics have played at the Coliseum since 1968, but have been looking to build a new ballpark in downtown Oakland.
Funding has been a key concern with the Oakland City Council voting later this month on a non-binding term sheet for that project. Manfred says the league considers Las Vegas as a “viable alternative for a major league club.”

Some of the newer rules in Major League Baseball might not stick around next season. In a press conference on Tuesday, Commissioner Rob Manfred said seven-inning doubleheaders and playing extra innings with a runner on second base probably won’t continue into 2022 and those rules were only installed due to COVID-19. Manfred also mentioned how the league could look into banning the shift, something that is being experimented in Double-A ball.
