Assistant superintendent discusses potential high school consolidation

Leadership of the Christian County Public School System continues to pursue the consolidation of the two high schools into one mega-school and Assistant Superintendent Josh Hunt appeared on WHOP Tuesday morning to discuss the initiative.

Hunt says the district is working on land selection and has narrowed it down to a few site possibilities, though he did not give specific locations.

He says the approximately 325,000 square foot school building could be built without increasing taxes by using a combination of bonding, COVID relief funds and potential grants.

It will likely be late next month or in September before the school board has to make a decision on whether they support going ahead with consolidation.

Hunt says the building would likely be two stories and renderings could be released to the public within the next couple of weeks.

While over 2,000 students will be in one building, Hunt says they will be broken down into smaller learning academies.

There are certainly those in the community who oppose consolidation and those who support it and everyone will be able to be heard at three community forums—July 26 at Christian County Middle School, August 2 at Crofton Elementary and August 12 at South Christian—with each getting underway at 6 p.m.
