A man indicted for robbery in connection with a December, 2020 incident at the East Seventh Dollar General entered a plea deal Wednesday morning in Christian Circuit Court.
Sixty-year-old James Carter was originally charged with first-degree robbery after he concealed merchandise at the store and shoved an employee to the ground as he and his daughter fled the store.
Carter entered an Alford plea Wednesday to an amended charge of first-degree wanton endangerment, which comes with a recommended three-year sentence. The Commonwealth is opposed to probation.
Judge John Atkins set sentencing for August 25 and will allow him to be released until that date.
An Alford plea means the defendant doesn’t admit guilt, but acknowledges there is enough evidence that a guilty verdict is likely if the case went to trial.
Carter’s daughter, 36-year old Jasmine Quarles of Nicholasville, was recently served with a warrant for robbery in connection with the same incident, as she allegedly also concealed items as they fled the store.
