Jaylynn Cheatham, the man charged in connection with a shooting at a gas station on East Ninth Street that severely injured a man and hurt another, was arraigned in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday.
Defense attorney David Rye entered a not guilty plea on his behalf and entered in an appearance in the case. Judge Andrew Self set a pretrial conference for July 14, saying there is a possibility a new indictment will be returned against Cheatham by that time.
Cheatham is accused of shooting both 20-year old Darrius Quarles of Hopkinsville and 38-year old Bryan Jones of Cadiz at a gas station at the intersection of East Ninth Street and South Campbell Street. Quarles was found with multiple gunshot wounds at the scene and flown to Skyline Medical Center in critical condition—Jones arrived by private vehicle at a local hospital later, where he was treated and released.
Windows of the gas station were shot out and 21 bullet fragments were recovered by investigators. Cheatham is charged with attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.
