Suspect killed during alleged armed home invasion on South Vine

A man was killed during an alleged armed home invasion early Thursday morning on South Vine Street.

Hopkinsville Police Sgt. Tony Sierra says officers responded to 156 South Vine just after midnight for an unknown problem and made contact with the resident and a witness outside, with the resident identified as 37-year old Teron Mayes, saying the man still inside the home had attempted to rob them at gunpoint.

He said the suspect was seriously injured during a struggle that ensued in the incident—EMS verified he was dead, and he has been identified as 36-year old Columbus McGee of Hopkinsville.

Sgt. Sierra says Mayes and the witness were interviewed and it currently appears that they acted in self-defense. A search warrant was obtained for the home as the investigation continued.

Mayes reportedly said he choked McGee during the struggle, but Sgt. Sierra says the exact cause of death wasn’t immediately known.

They also said allegedly McGee’s gun discharged during the incident, but police were not able to determine where the shot went.

Mayes was treated for several facial injuries at Jennie Stuart Medical Center and then released, while the witness was not hurt.
