Elkton woman arrested on DUI, child abuse, assault of officer charges

The Todd County Sheriff’s Office arrested an Elkton woman Friday for DUI and child abuse following an investigation on Butler Road.

Two deputies investigated a complaint of a vehicle stopped in the road in the 400 block of Butler and a news release says they found 22-year old Maraya Wentzel of Elkton in the driver’s seat and two children in the rear seat.

When deputies tried to obtain information from Wentzel, who appeared to be under the influence, she reportedly retrieved one of the children from the car and tried to flee on foot.

A brief struggle ensued as deputies attempted to take the child from her and Wenztel allegedly bit both deputies on the hand and arms.

The child was freed and both children were taken into the custody of the Department of Community Based Services.

Wentzel was arrested and charged with DUI, two counts of third-degree criminal child abuse under the age of 12, two counts of third-degree assault of a police officer, two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and resisting arrest.

The two deputies were treated for minor injuries at a medical facility.
