Plea deal accepted in shooting incident case

A plea deal was accepted Friday morning in Christian Circuit by a man charged with firing gunshots toward a woman last September on East Fourth Street in Hopkisnville.

Thirty-four-year-old Dayron Caldwell was arrested September 28 for two counts of wanton endangerment and criminal mischief and he was later indicted for tampering with a witness.

The original arrest citation said the victim went to a residence on Fourth to pick up some mattresses and said she found them in the rain. She told Hopkinsville police she attempted to break a window to get inside the home where her name was also on the lease and that’s when Caldwell opened the door and fired three shots from a gun into the air.

He then fired a fourth shot into the side of the victim’s vehicle as she fled the scene with another woman.

No one was injured and Caldwell followed them to James Village, where he pointed his gun at the woman again, but did not shoot, before breaking her rear glass.

Caldwell pled guilty to the wanton endangerment, tampering with evidence and possession of a handgun by a felon charges as part of a deal that comes with a total sentence of seven years, with Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jerad Smith saying the Commonwealth is neutral on probation.

Judge John Atkins accepted Caldwell’s plea and set final sentencing for July 28, when he will decide whether Caldwell gets probation or goes to prison after reviewing his presentence investigation report.

Caldwell noted he’s now working a full-time job at an industrial facility in the Bowling Green area.
