Hopkinsville High School graduated a very proud and relieved class of 2021 Friday night at the Stadium of Champions.
The 258 graduates walked across the grass to the applause of their friends and family—much different from the virtual ceremonies that took place last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Principal Dr. James Gunn told them all they more than earned that praise, after a year of interrupted education, unexpected obstacles and guidelines that they took in stride.
The commencement speaker was Hopkinsville Middle School teacher and Association Pastor of Virginia Street Baptist Church Donavan Pinner, who congratulated them on their victory, and urged them to go forward with the confidence that they can handle whatever may come their way.
Hopkinsville High School had Averie Turner as Valedictorian and Braden Howell was the Salutatorian. The other Top Ten Honor students during a very different year were Chase Atkins, Madison McKinnis, Gracey Meacham, James Kinney, Anna Howell, McKalee Sims, Samaria Sims and Calvin Demps.
The school took some time to recognize graduates of honor, those who have signed up to serve in the Armed Forces, and recognized 101 students who earned an ACT score of 28 or higher. Diplomas were presented to the families of Elijah Austin and Darius Majors, who tragically passed away and who would have graduated this year.
