Bond reduced for Brafman in arson, attempted murder case

Christian Circuit Judge John Atkins has reduced the bond amount for Karen Brafman, the woman accused of setting fire to a mobile home with a family inside in May of 2018.

In an order issued Monday, Judge Atkins set Brafman’s bond at $25,000 cash or real property worth $50,000. Bond had been set at $100,000.

If she is released, she will be on home incarceration 24 hours a day, seven days a week with pre-arranged travel coordinated through Christian County Adult Services. She would also be on an ankle monitor, could not contact with anyone associated with the case and she could not consume drugs or alcohol.

A jury in 2019 found Karen Brafman guilty of first-degree arson, second-degree arson and six counts of attempted murder and gave her a life sentence. She allegedly set fire to a mobile home on Princeton Road with six people inside, including four children.

The Kentucky Supreme Court reversed the decision in December, saying she was denied a fair trial when Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling opposed her using a defense that she was intoxicated—even though he knew she had been at the time of the crime.

Her new trial is set for October 18 of this year.
