Two celebrate success, graduation from Veterans Treatment Court program

Two local veterans are celebrating the completion of the Veterans Treatment Court program, and the hard work and life changing events that had to take place for it to happen.

Each participant was in the program for quite some time—with ups and downs, issues caused by the pandemic, deployment and more—and via a Zoom celebration Monday, District Judge Foster Cotthoff says this program is different from drug and other treatment courses, because their participants have struggles that others may not have to face, making their success even more impressive.

Matthew Moore says this program changed his life in every way you could name, and always for the better—and now he’s ready to move forward with pride.

Deandreia Russell says now that’s coming to an end, it’s bittersweet—she says she will miss the staff, but thanks to them, she now has the skills to make good decisions for herself and her family.

The Veterans’ Treatment Court is designed to help veterans achieve stable mental health and recover from addiction. The program provides court-supervised treatment for veterans as an alternative to incarceration and supports them with services to address the issues that contributed to criminal behavior.
