Kiwanis Soap Box Derby to change venues this year, club hears COVID-19 update.

The Kiwanis Club’s Soap Box Derby will have a change of venue this year and the local club heard an update on COVID-19 during its weekly meeting Thursday.

Club President Paige Parker says there’s a build clinic Saturday from 10-2 at Zig Zag Bouncers and they need members to volunteer to help teach youngsters how to assemble and maintain their cars.

The Derby will be June 11 and 12 and Parker says the 2021 edition will not be on Bethel Hill, it will instead be at Ruff Park.

There will be another build clinic later this month.

Amanda Sweeney-Brunt was the keynote speaker Thursday and says vaccination appointments are still available on the Christian County Health Department website. Only 5-percent of those vaccinated so far in Christian County have been African-Americans and Sweeney-Brunt says they’re making a concerted effort to reach all under-served populations.

COVID case numbers have been up lately and there have been at least two cases of the more contagious UK variant located in Christian County.

She reminded that they continue to perform COVID testing Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 until 11 at the health department on Canton Street, but it is by appointment only.
