HRC presents Woman of the Year Award, Women Educating Women scholarship

The Hopkinsville Human Rights Commission awarded the Woman of the Year award Thursday afternoon, along with the Women Educating Women Scholarship.

The event happened virtually this year, and watchers got to hear from several of the applicants for the Women Educating Women Scholarship, including the recipient, Elizabeth Peebles, a senior at University Heights Academy.  She read her essay that was part of the scholarship competition about why woman should hold local office, saying the United States was founded on the idea of equal representation.

This year’s Woman of the Year award went to Melissa Lynch, Director of the Oak Grove Community Center. Melissa Lynch was described in her nomination as being “a driving force for Good in the Oak Grove, Christian County community.”

HRC Executive Director Idalia Luna says they’ve been highlighting the inspirational women of Christian County for all of March, and women’s history continues to happen today.

The event honored the local women who were taken by COVID-19, and she says they will never forget those women and will continue their fight from here.

Luna thanked all the donors who helped fund the scholarship program and the community for their continued support of the Human Rights Commission.
