Statewide campaign underway to encourage Black Kentuckians to get COVID vaccine

The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and Kentucky Nurses Association are combining forces on a campaign to address hesitancy in the African-American community about taking the COVID-19 vaccines.

Its theme is “I got the shot to protect the ones I love,” as announced by Foundation Executive Director Ben Chandler.

Chandler notes the vaccine rollout began with a less than proportionate number of Black Kentuckians being vaccinated, but those numbers are improving.

Hopkinsville businessman and Christian County School Board Chairman Tom Bell is one of several Kentuckians featured prominently in the campaign and admits he had some hesitancy about being vaccinated before doing his own research.

Bell notes he’s known people who have become very sick and people who have died from coronavirus and it’s important for Kentuckians to take the vaccine to protect themselves and those they love.

He says he’ll be working with local pastors and hopes they will urge their congregations to be vaccinated.

More information on the campaign will be posted on the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky website.
