Time winding down on 2021 General Assembly session

Time is winding down on the 2021 short session of the Kentucky General Assembly and while a budget compromise still hasn’t seen the light of day, other bills are making it out of both chambers.

Representative Myron Dossett of Pembroke supports legislation that passed the Senate that would allow high school students to spend an extra year in school if they choose to for academic or athletic reasons after the pandemic disrupted so many things.

Meanwhile, the House passed House Bill 148, which would make defendants charged with a capital offense, such as murder, exempt from eligibility for execution if they have a documented history of a serious mental illness at the time of the offense.

Representative Walker Thomas of Hopkinsville voted against the measure, believing it already takes too long to execute a defendant convicted of a capital offense.

State Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County carried a House bill that passed that Senate that creates a mechanism for counties to show their commitment to rehabilitating people fighting addiction.
