New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone will be away from the team for a short time. He’s taking a medical leave of absence after surgery yesterday to have a pacemaker implanted. The 47-year-old Boone had open-heart surgery in 2009. He could return to the team in two or three days.

Jon Lester is in New York to have his thyroid gland removed on Friday. Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez says the left-handed starting pitcher went there Wednesday for the procedure. Martinez says the five-time All-Star and three-time World Series champ felt fatigued and consulted with a doctor after tests before opting for the surgery. Martinez says Lester will likely be away from the club for five to seven days, but expects he’ll be ready for the start of the season April 1st.
